Hope House, Inc. is a residential treatment facility that serves women 18 years and older who suffer from the disease of substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. Hope House serves three populations of women: homeless single women, pregnant women, and women with children, many who are seeking to regain custody of their children.

Graduate-Level Clinical Internship

Hope House, Inc. is pleased to offer graduate-level clinical training for individuals enrolled in university programs for mental health. Dr. Sarah Shelton is a licensed clinical psychologist and is the Director of Psychology Training and Education at Hope House. Dr. Shelton offers supervision for psychology practicum students, interns, residents, and postdoctoral fellows. Training experiences include evaluation, diagnosis & treatment planning, individual therapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, and the opportunity to function as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team through participation in weekly case conferences. Affiliates from Troy University, Augusta State University, and the Medical College of Georgia are encouraged to apply. Individuals from other appropriate training programs will also be considered. Accepted individuals will be paired with experienced mental health providers for mentoring and hands-on training and will receive their required weekly clinical supervision from Dr. Shelton. Students with a particular interest in substance abuse, women’s issues, public health, and health psychology will be given preference.

Hope House is an excellent training opportunity because of its rich array of clinical issues and treatment modalities. Trainees obtain experience providing individual, group, and family therapy with the women and their children. The commonality across patients is, of course, addiction. However, every woman at Hope House has a unique life story and presents with challenges specific to her own situation. This means that trainees gain expertise not only in the area of substance abuse intervention but also in the treatment of a variety of mental health concerns ranging from mood and thought disorders, to trauma, to relationship issues and parenting skills. Dr. Shelton says, "I am confident that after trainees leave Hope House, they enter the professional world as more competent and compassionate caregivers."
